CT Angiography is a new and safe outpatient procedure
that uses specifically designed x-rays and intravenous contrast to see
detailed anatomy of the blood vessels throughout the body. It is most
frequently utilized in the evaluation of arteries in the head, neck, chest,
abdomen, and legs. Standard catheter angiography (see above) is the still
the “gold standard” when you need to diagnose arterial disease, but its risk
is higher because of the use of the catheter placement. CTA is less
invasive and the patient can go home shortly afterwards and resume normal
activities.
For this procedure you will have and
IV inserted and will be placed on the CT (CAT scan) table. While the
scanner is working, you will be given a contrast agent through the IV, which
may produce a temporary warming sensation. The IV is removed after the scan
and you will be sent home. The radiologist will then process and evaluate
the 3D images of your vessels.
